Community Service Projects

At Olive Hackney we place a great deal of emphasis on community based projects as part of our STAR values.

In Project Based Learning, pupils go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a question, problem or challenge. While allowing for some degree of pupil “voice and choice,” rigorous projects are carefully planned, managed and assessed to help pupils learn key academic content, practice 21st Century skills and bring about high quality outcomes.

Pupils will be expected, as part of this element of the curriculum, to be involved in choosing the projects they develop and in raising charitable funds. Pupils in upper Key Stage 2 will be expected to take lead roles in their project and to demonstrate increasing understanding of the responsibilities in undertaking different leadership roles. Community Service project work contributes to the awarding of the Star mini-Baccalaureate for each pupil.

Exemplar projects which phase groups might engage in are:

  • Creating a brochure introducing their school and community to visitors and new pupils.
  • Bringing unwanted toys to school to give to children in need.
