Pupils’ love of reading aided by book scheme
Young pupils at a Hackney primary school are discovering the joy of reading thanks to a unique collaboration with a local independent bookshop.
Staff at The Olive School, Hackney have joined forces with the owners of Stoke Newington Bookshop to help pupils develop their passion for reading.
The scheme enables pupils to select a book from a list created by knowledgeable staff at the bookshop which they are then able to keep and enjoy at home.
Pupils were also gifted vouchers so they could also experience the enjoyment of browsing titles and buying books in the shop.
The book scheme, which has been introduced to help support the school’s existing literacy scheme, Star Readers, is funded and supported by school governors.
Babar Mirza, Principal at The Olive School, Hackney thanked staff at the shop and governors for their support.
He said: “This scheme has been incredibly popular with our pupils and we would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has helped to support it.
“In a world where screens can have a tendency to dominate, it is gratifying to see pupils absorbed in a book. Our pupils have very much enjoyed the process of selecting and taking their books home as part of this new scheme.
“Literacy and our pupils’ enjoyment of the written word is hugely important in our school. This collaboration is one of several schemes we have in place which aim to encourage and develop pupils’ literacy. Our Star Readers scheme, for example, inspires pupils to take up a reading challenge which is rewarded and celebrated across the whole school.
“I hope that these small seeds, that have been planted early in their lives, will help them to grow into ardent book lovers who enjoy a lifelong passion for reading.”
